چکیده

Aerodynamic efficiency of intermodal freight trains can be significantly improved by minimizing the adjusted gap lengths between adjacent loads. This paper first develops a static model to optimize load placement on a sequence of intermodal trains that have scheduled departure times. This model applies when full information on all trains and loads is available. Then, a dynamic model is developed to account for the realistic situation where information on future trains and incoming loads may not be completely available. This paper seeks ways to balance between: (i) the advantage from optimizing multiple trains together; and (ii) the risk of making suboptimal decisions due to incomplete future information. We propose a rolling horizon scheme to address this challenge, where exponentially decreasing weights are assigned to the objective functions of future trains. Numerical results based on empirical data show significant aerodynamic efficiency benefits from these optimization models.

Optimizing the aerodynamic efficiency of intermodal freight trains

We develop an aerodynamic loading assignment model for intermodal freight trains based on an integer-programming framework to help terminal managers make up more fuel-efficient trains. This is the first use of optimization modeling to address the aerodynamics and energy efficiency of railroad intermodal trains. Several recommendations regarding railway equipment use, operations, and policy are ...

Receding–horizon optimal control for container transfer in intermodal terminals

A major feature of intermodal transportation systems is the presence of large container terminals, where loading and unloading of containers are split in different tasks that depend on carrier categories, cargo types and service requirements. The efficiency of a terminal is influenced by the ability to manage the various transfer tasks done by means of quay cranes, transfer cranes, trucks and s...

Multi-period and multi-resource operating room scheduling and rescheduling using a rolling horizon approach: a case study

In this paper, a multi-period and multi-resource operating room (OR) scheduling and rescheduling problem with elective and semi-elective (semi-urgent) patients is addressed. A scheduling-rescheduling framework based on the so-called rolling horizon approach is proposed to solve the problem. The core of the proposed framework is a novel proposed mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model with...

Modelling Rerouting Phenomena through Dynamic Traffic Assignment in Rolling Horizon

This article addresses the problem of simulating en-route path choices on transport networks. In particular, by rerouting, we mean changing the currently chosen path, after receiving some information about a traffic event. Indeed, when the forecasted performance pattern of travel times and costs, known or only perceived, changes significantly, drivers may react by shifting their current route t...
